Metaverse is widely regarded as the next phase of human evolution. The entrenched cyberspace is no longer a science fiction novel. While a consistent definition is yet to come, in broad terms, Metaverse is a global 3D visual network that integrates technologies such as VR and AR to build social connections and empower the digital economy. Recently, Facebook donated USD 10 billion to build its metaverse, enabling discussion on the topic. However, Facebook (now renamed Meta) is not the only game in the city of Metaverse.

Below, we take a look at some of the most powerful Metaverse platforms.

1. Decentraland

Ari Meilich and Esteban Ordano (both from Argentina) founded Decentraland, the world’s most visible 3D open-source platform, in 2015. The digital platform was priced at $20 and its cryptocurrency, MANA, sold for $0.02 when it was launched in 2017. The forum was opened to the public in February 2020, and is overseen by the Decentraland Foundation. Decentraland is one of the oldest Metaverse platforms and has partnered with Samsung and the Australian Open (AO) in the past.
